Free Market Oriented Retired Nova Scotian Salvage Yard Owner New President of ARA
Ed MacDonald, former owner of Maritime Auto Parts, Ltd, was named President of the ARA at its annual convention in Manassas., VA last month. Here is part of what he said about the direction of the ARA: “I believe that the effective model of auto recycling in North America, which is based on free enterprise, is the way auto recycling should continue to grow here, and beyond.” Read more about him and his plans for the ARA as reported by Truro Daily News. North Carolina Begins New Reporting System for Scrapped Vehicles
To reduce the number of stolen vehicles, North Carolina has begun requiring auto salvage yards and scrap dealers to verify vehicle information and check it against a DMV database prior to purchasing a vehicle more than ten model years old that is brought to them without a title. According to an article in Recycling Today, the new system will not be available on Sundays from 6 am to noon because it requires weekly maintenance. On the plus side, the recycler will not be held liable if the vehicle later turns out to be stolen, but it passes the check at the time of sale. Read the full story in this month’s Recycling Today.

Valentine Enterprises Seeking Approval for New Yard in Waterloo, IA on 37-Acre Parcel
It looks like Valentine Enterprises has encountered some stiff opposition from local residents in carrying out its plan to get approval to open a new salvage yard at 729 West Arline Highway in Waterloo, IA. Homeowners expressed fears that the salvage operation would contaminate their wells and drive down property values. A local bank sold the land to Hogelucht operating as Valentine Enterprises. Hogelucht plans to sell the land to a salvage operator if the city approves the land use plan changes needed for a yard at the site. The City Council tabled the request and will revisit it in about a month, according to an article in the local Cedar Valley newspaper.
